Man I am glad I am not alone on this one. I was counting down the
fucking seconds for this issue to come out and am a big fan of Amelia’s fashion choices. There is such a distinct line, even in camp, between expression and exploitation and it breaks my heart that this shoot completely tainted the whole issue for me.

Don’t tell people - especially oppressed people speaking out against what they feel is oppressing them - what to be offended by. Also, just because some members of an oppressed group aren’t offended doesn’t mean that others from that same group can’t be offended. The people you showed this picture to don’t speak for other indigenous people or people of color.
Finally, who are you to say what’s helpful or not? Helpful to who?
Not to be rude, but I think I’m someone who is in a very good position to offer my opinion on this topic. It seems like a waste when people who obviously want to be helpful misdirect their energy to things that are basically inconsequential, like this photoshoot. I’m not saying that cultural appropriation isn’t a complicated game, but there are SO MANY other ways people who are concerned about the welfare of indigenous populations can express it. You’re obviously intelligent, so I don’t think I need to list the endless problems and issues American Indians are facing. If people feel that strongly about the historical (and still on-going) mistreatment of Indians, then they would serve them way better by raising awareness of those issues.
And I know that a select group of people don’t speak for the entirety of a population, but by dismissing their responses, you’re invalidating their equally as valid thoughts, which is kind of messed up. Just saying.
